Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Missouri State
December 6, 2013
(Springfield, Missouri (Mediacom Ice Park)) A hat trick by Eric Grootenboer powered the Dordt College Blades to their first ever conference win with a 5-3 victory over Missouri State in a MACHA contest played in Springfield, Missouri. The Blades improve to 4-13 overall and 1-6 in the conference while the Ice Bears drop to 11-11 on the season and 3-3 in MACHA outings.
Just 49 seconds after the opening face-off, Grootenboer pocketed his first goal of the night, with an assist from Van Dyk, to give the Blades the early 1-0 lead. Thirteen minutes later Grootenboer added another tally, with a De Young assist, to put the Blades up 2-0. The Ice Bears cut the Dordt advantage down to 2-1 with a goal by Schmidt with 3:35 to play in the opening period.
Less than four minutes in to the second period, freshman defenseman Lucas Koomans, regained the two goal cushion for the Blades when he lit the lamp with an unassisted goal at 16:09. A minute later Missouri State answered back with a marker by Leslie to make it 3-2 at 15:04 and neither team found the net in the remaining fifteen minutes of the period.
Grootenboer picked up the hatty a mere 18 seconds in to the third period, scoring on the power play, with assists from Soodsma and Huitsing, to give Dordt a 4-2 advantage. For the third time on the night, the Ice Bears were able to respond with a goal at 16:19 to take away any breathing room. While clinging to the 4-3 lead, Eric Grootenboer's younger brother Kevin decided to get in on the scoring action (with an assist from Enerson)and netted one of his own at 6:52 to make it a 5-3 hockey game and that's how the contest ended.
Of note in the statistics department is the fact that both teams combined for only three total penalties in the hockey game with Dordt going one for two with the man advantage while successfully kicking off their lone penalty that came after taking the 5-3 lead.
Riley Braun made 29 saves in goal for the Blades while Mike Goorsky stopped 21 of Dordt's 26 shots.
