Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Colorado State: Clash in the Corn
November 22, 2013
(Sioux Center, Iowa (Vernon Arena)) The Blades were unable to hold off Colorado State University this evening as the Rams scored four times while holding Dordt to a lone power play goal to pick up the 4-1 win. CSU moves to the top of the table in The Clash in the Corn tournament and improve to 12-4 on the season while the Blades drop to 3-12 on the year and fall to fourth place in the six team showcase event.
Jake Christofferson put the Rams on the board with 8:25 to play in the first period when he buried a rebound to score his team leading 18th goal of the season. A roughing penalty on the Rams gave Dordt a chance to tie the game on the power play and the Blades did just that as senior Eric Grootenboer sent a nifty pass to Eric Huitsing who banged home his sixth goal of the year. Colorado State broke the 1-1 deadlock just 82 seconds before the first intermission as Emmett LaCombe picked up his seventh goal of the season.
After 17 minutes of scoreless action in period number two, the Rams extended their lead when Jed Howard ripped a slapshot from the right side that squirted in behind Dordt netminder Riley Braun and Mikey Komnikar tucked home the rebound to give the Rams a two goal cushion going in to the second intermission.
The Blades were unable to breath new life in to the contest midway through the third when they were unable to convert on their lone attempt on the power play. CSU put the game out of reach as Ben Reamon skated down the left and pocketed an unassisted goal past Braun on the short side with 3:12 to play in the third game, securing the 4-1 victory.
Riley Braun had 39 saves in goal for the Blades while counterpart Vince Case had 26 stops in picking up his third win of the season.
Dordt College was perfect on the penalty kill, thwarting all three of CSU's tries with the man advantage. The Blades were 1 for 3 on the power play.
Both teams will play again tomorrow as the Rams try to win the "Cob Cup" as the tournament champion while Dordt College will try to send Metro State back to Denver with their lone loss over the three days of competition. Colorado State will play Wisconsin-Platteville at 1:30 pm while Dordt College will close out the event with a game at 4:30 pm against the Roadrunners of Metro State.
