Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Iowa State

(Sioux Center, Iowa (Vernon Arena)) The Blades were able to shut-out the visiting Cyclones for the first and third periods but gave up four goals in the middle frame, falling 4-1 to Iowa State this afternoon in a MACHA Silver West conference tilt. With the win the Cyclones improve to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in conference while Dordt falls to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the MACHA.
Riley Braun kept the Blades in the contest early on as the senior netminder from Altona, Manitoba turned away 24 of 24 Iowa State shots in the opening period, as the Blades were outshot 24-4, and the teams ended the first period deadlocked 0-0.
Anthony Houge broke the tie when he knocked in a rebound at the 18:20 mark in the second period. John Toigo gave the Cyclones a 2-0 lead with a goal from the blue line at 15:51. Goals at 3:33 and 1:18, by Sam Leskun and Brian Holappa respectively, gave Iowa State a four goal cushion going in to the locker room, with Holappa's goal coming on the power play.
The Blades broke their lengthy scoring drought when Eric Huitsing picked up a power play marker with 9:40 to play in the third period with assists from Eric Grootenboer and Chris Soodsma. The goal was Huitsing's fifth of the season.
The Blades were 1 of 5 with the man advantage and were 2 of 3 on the penalty kill.
For the second consecutive night, Riley Braun made 45 saves on 49 shots as the Blades were outshot 49-16 on the afternoon. Reid McMahon picked up the win in goal for ISU with 15 saves on 16 shots.
Dordt will next play host to the Clash in the Corn tournament which begins with a game against Wyoming at 7:30 pm on Thursday, November 21 at 7:30 pm.
