Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Northern Colorado
October 24, 2013
(Greeley Ice Haus, Greeley, Colorado) A pair of goals from Dordt's leading goal scorer, Nic Enerson, was not enough to lift the Blades over the University of Northern Colorado as they fell to the Bears 11-5. Northern Colorado came in to the contest riding a four game winning streak and improve their record to 7-1-1 with the victory while the Blades fall to 2-3.
It took a while for Dordt College to get their skating legs as the Bears tallied three goals in the opening three minutes and 12 seconds to take a very early 3-0 advantage. Kevin Vermeer got the Blades on the board with an unassisted goal at 12:38 but Northern Colorado pushed the lead to four with back to back goals at 8:02 and 4:51. Dordt's Andrew DeHaan finished off the first period scoring with an unassisted marker at 1:35.
Entering the second period trailing 5-2, the Blades struck first in the middle session with a goal from Nic Enerson at 17:09 with helpers going to Kevin Vermeer and Alex Ten Napel, making it a 5-3 game. After combining for eight goals in the first 23 minutes of action, things tightened up a bit as the two sides would go the next nine minutes without a goal. UNC's Kyle Riley ended what must have seemed like a scoring drought when his goal at 8:09 pushed the Bears advantage back to three (6-3). Just over 30 seconds later, at 7:33, Dordt replied with another goal from Nic Enerson to bring the Blades back within two (6-4). A pair of goals coming just 81 seconds apart pushed the Northern Colorado gap back to four with goals at 6:36 and 5:15. With 2:11 to play in the second period, Dordt's Alex Ten Napel got on the board to pull the Blades within three (8-5) with an assist going to Eric Huitsing.
The Bears scored two more times in the opening five minutes of the third period to take a commanding 10-5 lead and added another at 7:34 for the 11-5 final score.
Dordt's Riley Braun turned away 35 shots in the loss while Nate Chomyn had 24 saves, picking up the win for the Bears.
Dordt College will play their second of three games in Colorado on Friday, October 25 when they take on Colorado State at 7:30 PM (Mountain Time) in Fort Collins.
