Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Colorado
November 16, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa (Vernon Arena)) For the second time this season the Dordt Blades lose a close game to the Colorado Buffaloes by a score of 2-1 and fall to 2-10 on the season while Colorado moves to a 4-9 mark on the year.
As they did on October 26 in Colorado, the Blades fell behind by 2 goals, with both goals tonight coming in the first period. Early in the first period the Buffs were able to get on the board, while on the power play, with a shot from about 15 feet out that found its way past Dordt netminder Riley Braun at 17:49. Tyson Riddell had the goal with the assist going to Robert Ash. Nate Grush knocked a goal home from right in front of the Dordt cage with 1:47 to go off an assist from Tyler Patrick to take a 2-0 lead in to the first intermission.
The second period featured action early and late as a shattered section of glass in the Vernon Arena caused about a 15 minute delay at 17:49 of the period. With just a minute and 7 seconds left in the period, Tommy Dyer cut the Dordt deficit in half when he skated in and buried a quality top shelf goal in on the right side past netminder Fred Newton and the teams went to the break with Colorado up 2-1. The goal was Dyer's first of the year after just joining the Blades at the conclusion of the Dordt football season last Saturday.
In spite of outshooting Colorado 10-9 in the final period the Blades could not get the game tying goal and the Buffaloes were able to kill off a penalty in the latter stages of the period to secure the win.
The Buffaloes were 1-4 with the man advantage with the Dordt Blades going 0-7 on the power play.
Riley Braun had 39 saves in goal for the Blades and Fred Newton turned away 24 of 25.
Dordt College and Colorado will face off again tomorrow (November 17) at 4:15 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa.
