November 3, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa (Vernon Arena)) The Dordt College Blades fell 9-5 this afternoon to Missouri State in an MACHA contest held in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center. Dordt drops to 2-7 on the years with the loss while the Ice Bears improve to 11-3.
In a repeat of last evening, the Ice Bears got on the scoreboard early with 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of action. Brian Leslie recorded both unassisted goals at 18:43 and 18:06. Five minutes later Dordt tied the game with a pair of goals just 35 seconds apart. David Prins picked up the first goal with a slapshot from the right point that rocketed in to the bottom right corner off assists from Eric Walter and Allen Vanderveen. Thirty five seconds later, Eric Grootenboer tucked one in behind the Ice Bear netminder with helpers from Fast and De Young. With the score tied at 2-2 Dordt College appeared to have the go ahead goal from Kevin Vermeer with 11:40 to play in the period. After a lengthy consultation by the officiating crew the goal was waved off on an apparent delayed offside call. The goal was not the only thing that was taken away as Dordt also lost the momentum and the Ice Bears retook the lead with power play goals at 10:51 and 8:01 to take a 4-2 lead in to the first intermission.
Dordt's Brandon Fast made it a one goal game just 20 seconds in to the second period with an unassisted goal to make it 4-3. Missouri State replied with a Drew Sorci goal at 11:09 and Michael Glenn picked up a power play goal at 9:12 for a 6-3 score. Brandon Fast got the lead back down to 2 again with his second goal of the night at 8:31 with an assist from Eric Grootenboer, but the Ice Bears tallied the final goal of the period, a power play marker at 6:10, to enter the final intermission with a 3 goal cushion.
As they had in the second period, Dordt came out of the locker room in the third showing some grit and determination and again scored early with Chase VanGaalen making it a 7-5 contest just 19 seconds in to the frame. However, the Blades would not get any closer as Missouri State would pick up two more goals in the later stages of the period to pick up the 9-5 win and the sweep of the Blades.
Missouri State was 4-6 with the man advantage while the Dordt Blades were 0-3 on the power play.
