Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Missouri State

(Sioux Center, Iowa (Vernon Arena)) The Dordt College Blades surrendered 2 goals in the opening period and 3 more in the second and were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 8-2 to the Missouri State Ice Bears in an MACHA contest held in the Vernon Arena this evening. The Dordt Blades fall to 2-6 with the loss while the Ice Bears improve to 10-3 this season.
A minute and 56 seconds second in to the contest the Ice Bears knocked in a loose puck in front of the Dordt cage to take an early 1-0 lead, with Kory Recowski getting the early marker. Missouri State tagged on another goal with just 40 seconds left in the opening period, when Steve Lee tallied his third goal of the season, to take a 2-0 advantage to the break.
One minute in to the second period, Alex Mundt scored his 6th goal of the year for the Ice Bears, to make a 3-0 hockey game. A power play goal at the 12:14 mark by Steve Lee, his second goal of the night made it 4-0 and Missouri State added a 5th, again on the power play, as Tyler Ellis scored to make it 5-0 at the break.
Eric Grootenboer, who was seeing his first action as a Dordt Blade this year, having just finished a fantastic soccer season where he led the team with 11 goals, banged home a goal at the 15:59 mark to cut the gap down to 4. Assisting on the Grootenboer tally were Eric Huitsing and Brandon Fast. A little more than a minute later Missouri State responded with a goal of their own to push the lead back to 5 with a Cody Blevins goal at 14:46. David Prins and Kevin Vermeer got their first points of the campaign for the Blades when Vermeer found Prins in front of the goal at 12:22 to make it 6-2.
Missouri State tagged on two more at 10:21 (Leslie) and 6:47 (Sorci) for the 8-2 final.
The Blades were 0-5 with the man advantage while the Ice Bears were 2-4 on the power play.
Riley Braun had 33 saves in goal for the Blades with Austin Hoglen turning away 28 shots for Missouri State.
Dordt and Missouri State will square off again on Saturday, November 3 at 4:15 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center.
