(Vernon Arena, Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Blades notched a shut-out victory in their home opener this evening (October 19) as they defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 4-0. With the win the Blades improve to 1-2 on the season while the Jayhawks drop to 0-3.

In spite of outshooting the Jayhawks by a substantial margin in the first period the Blades were unable to find the back of the Kansas net until Dylan Van Dyk scored from what looked like an impossible angle with 5:37 left in the opening period. While on the power play Van Dyk took a pass from Andrew De Young and skated to the right side of the Kansas goal before sending a wrister from just off the goal line that found its way in to the top left hand corner behind Kansas netminder TJ Berk. The goal was Van Dyk's first as a Blade and the lone tally gave Dordt College a 1-0 lead going in to the first intermission. First period shots on goal were 16-8 in favor of the Blades.

Dordt extended their lead in the second and added to it again in the third as the tandem of Brandon Fast and Eric Huitsing connected for a pair of goals. The first of the two came with 13:36 left in the second period when Huitsing found Fast for the marker while the second came with 8:50 remaing in the second as Huitsing found Fast in the slot area and Fast sent a shot in to the top left corner. The goals were Fast's first and second of the season as were the helpers for Huitings. Shots on goal in the second period were 11-11.

Nic Enerson put the game out of reach when he knocked home a rebound with 6:16 left in the final period to make it a 4-0 lead; the goal was Enerson's second of the season. The Blades dominated the final period of play outshooting the Jayhawks 17-5.

Riley Braun played all 60 minutes in goal for the Blades, turning away all 24 of the Kansas shots to record his first shut-out of the young season.

TJ Berk had the loss in goal for the Jayhawks, turning away 43 of the 47 Dordt College shots; with the loss Berk falls to 0-2 on the season in goal.

The Blades finished the evening going 1 for 2 with the man advantage while successfully killing off all 4 of the Jayhawk power play chances.

The Blades will face off against the University of Kansas again tomorrow (October 20) at 4:15 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa.
