Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. University of South Dakota
November 4, 2011
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades surrendered 4 goals in the first period but replied with a dominating second period where they scored 4 goals of their own, before falling in a shoot-out to the University of South Dakota after a scoreless third period and overtime.
The Coyotes found the back of the Dordt cage quickly in tonight's game as Sydney Kroll made it a 1-0 game just 79 seconds into the contest. Andy Hass made it 2-0 with a goal at 16:55 and goals by Wieseler and Bollinger 61 seconds apart at 4:15 and 3:14 made it 4-0 in favor of USD and the Coyotes took the 4 goal lead in to the first intermission. After giving up 4 even strength goals in the opening 17 minutes, Dordt netminder Nico VanKeulen was replaced by Riley Braun.
The second period would see the Blades respond with a 4 goal session of their own. Eric Grootenboer energized the Blades and the crowd with his first goal of the season at 16:38 with assists from Vermeer and Veldhuisen. Eric Huitsing scored his 6th goal of the season at 14:19 to cut the intermission lead in half. Kevin Christian also banged in his sixth goal of the year at 7:30 with helpers from Brandon Fast and Eric Huitsing to make it 4-3 and Jon Gesink tied the game with a power play goal with just 14 seconds left in the second period to knot the game at 4-4 with the assist going to Brandon Fast.
Dordt successfully killed off a too many men on the ice penalty late in the third period to force the overtime session. USD looked to have the upper hand in the overtime session when Dordt defenseman Jon Gesink was whistled for holding with 1:33 remaining, giving the Coyotes a 4 on 3, but USD's Sydney Kroll was issued a roughing penalty just 6 seconds later and the two teams played the final 87 seconds three on three. Neither team was able to find the net forcing the shoot-out.
Dordt's first two skaters in the shoot-out were stopped by Coyote netminder Blake Dunfee while USD's first two shooters were able to get pucks behind Dordt's Riley Braun to take the shoot-out 2-0. Braun had 33 saves in the contest, giving up no goals over the final 43 minutes of regulation and 5 minutes of 4 on 4 overtime. Blade Dunfee has 46 saves in the win for the University of South Dakota.
With the overtime loss Dordt is now 2-5-0-1 while the Coyotes improve to 2-2.
Dordt College was 1-5 on the power play and a perfect 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.
Dordt will travel to Brookings, SD on Thursday, November 10 for an 8:00 pm game against the Jacks.
