Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. South Dakota State University

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Blades enjoyed a 3-1 lead after the first period but could not survive an SDSU 5 goal outburst in the second period, dropping the contest 9-3 to the Jacks. The loss marked the second 9 goal game suffered by the Blades at the hands of SDSU, falling last night in Brookings 9-7. With the win the Jacks improve to 14-2 on the year and an unblemished 7-0 road record while the Blades drop to 6-15-2-1 for the season.
The Blades fell behind early when Hunter Anshutz scored just a little over 3 minutes in the contest in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center to give the Jacks the 1-0 lead. Three goals in a span of 5 minutes put the Blades on top 3-1. The first of the three came from Eric Huitsing, his team leading 17th of the season, at 14:22 with an assist from Brandon Fast. Kevin Vermeer knocked home a rebound at 11:03 to get his 3rd of the season, with helpers from Prins and De Young. An unassisted goal in to the top left corner by Kevin Christian (9th) gave the Blades a 3-1 lead with 9:43 and they took that two goal lead in to the first intermission.
Shots on goal in the first period were 21 for SDSU and 10 for Dordt College with Blades' senior netminder Nico VanKeulen turning away 20 shots.
At 13:27 in the second period SDSU's Matt Schabaker cut the lead in half with a wobbler that found its way behind VanKeulen to make it 3-2. Dordt could not capitalize on a full two minute 5 on 3 and shortly after the power play ended Kaleb Juntunen tied the game with a goal at 10:12, just 22 seconds after the SDSU penalties had expired. Juntunen added goals at 6:27 and :32 with all three tallies coming with helpers from Snyder and Fitzer. Tim Rotert added another second period goal with two-tenths of a second left to give the Jacks a 6-3 lead.
Shots on goal in the second period were 13-10 in favor of SDSU.
Goals by Matt George and Hunter Anshutz made it an 8-3 game. Dordt's netminder Riley Braun was inserted in to the line up with 8 minutes and 55 seconds left in the game and just 19 seconds in to his ice time saw a great shot by Josh Snyder on a breakaway get past his glove hand for the 9-3 final.
Shots on goal in the final period were 15-15
Tyler Lawerence picked up the win in goal for SDSU while Nico VanKeulen received the loss in goal for the Blades.
Dordt College will finish up their season with a pair of 10:30 pm games against Northwestern Health Sciences University on February 10 and 11 in Minnesota.
