Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. South Dakota State

(Brookings, South Dakota) The Dordt Blades fell by a final of 9-7 to South Dakota State University in ACHA D3 hockey action this evening (February 2, 2012). The loss is the third this year to the Jacks and the Blades will have one final chance against SDSU as the two teams will face off again on Friday, February 3rd with a game to be played in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center beginning at 7:30 pm.
The Jacks improve to 13-2 on the season with the victory and the Blades move to 6-14-2-1.
Jeremy van Woerden put Dordt College up 1-0 knocking in his second goal of the season with 3:21 left in the first period. A minute and a half later the Jacks tied the game when Juntenen tallied at 2:06 and the teams ended the period knotted at 1-1.
Dordt regained the lead with a goal less than 90 seconds in to the second period as Brandon Fast banged home his 11th of the year. Back to back goals by Juntunen and Novak for SDSU gave the Jacks their first lead of the contest, 3-2. Doug Veldhuisen’s 7th goal of the year tied the game at 3-3 with 9:16 to play in the second period and two goals in the final 5 minutes of the second period gave SDSU a 5-3 lead going in to the second intermission.
Goals at 18:54 and 14:30 put the Jacks up 7-3. Eric Huitsing’s team leading 16th goal of the year came on the power play and made it 7-4 with 10:55 to play. Juntunen’s hat trick earning 3rd goal gave SDSU back a 4 goal cushion with 8:36 remaining. Twelve seconds later Andrew Ter Haar netted his 2nd goal of the year for the Blades to make it 8-5 and Fast’s second goal of the night made it a two goal game with 6:42 left. A second goal by Tom Novak gave SDSU some insurance and Veldhuisen’s goal for Dordt with less than a second remaining made it a 9-7 final.
Brandon Fast and Eric Huitsing both ended the night with 4 points with Fast's coming on 2 goals and 2 assists while Huitsing had a goal and 3 helpers. Hunter Anshutz and Tom Novak also had 4 points each for SDSU with both players getting 2 goals and 2 assists while teammate Kaleb Juntunen had the hat trick for 3 points. Matt George (1 goal and 2 assists) and Connor Fitzer (3 assists)both picked up 3 points as well.
Riley Braun, who had 40 saves on the night, took the loss in goal for the Blades whil Gil Haugan picked up his 5th win of the year making 42 saves for SDSU.
The Dordt College Blades will take on the SDSU Jacks at 7:30 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center on Friday, February 3rd.
