Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. University of Nebraska-Lincoln
January 21, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) A great performance last night helped the Blades force overtime with Nebraska but this afternoon the Cornhuskers proved to be too much for Dordt College as they skated away with a 10-4 win. The Huskers, who are currently ranked third in the Pacific Region, improve to 14-6-0-1 with the win while the Blades drop to 5-12-0-1 on the season.
Twenty-eight seconds in to the contest the Huskers got on the board when their leading goal scorer Matti Roinila pocketed his 17th goal of the season. Already on the power play, the Blades were able to get out an extra attacker on a delayed penalty and with 6 skaters against Nebraska's four, Dordt's Nic Enerson was able to pocket an unassisted goal, his 4th goal of the season at 13:39 to tie the game at 1-1. With an odd man rush, Nebraska took the lead for good as Roinila scored his second goal of the night with 6:26 remaining in the first period and Drew Kokosa scored a short-handed goal with exactly 3 minutes left in the period to take a 3-1 lead in to the break.
While playing 4 on 4, Kokosa scored his second of the night with 13:28 to play in the second period to give the Huskers a 4-1 lead. Dordt's Doug Veldhuisen cut the Nebraska lead down to two at 11:52 when he put a nice shot in to the left side of the next to beat Jarrod Straw; the goal was Veldhuisen's third of the season. A goal by Nebraska's Mike Pickerel with 3:42 to play made it a 5-2 hockey game and the hat trick goal by Kokosa at 1:26 made it 6-2. Veldhuisen got his second of the night on an assist from Andrew De Haan with 1:13 to play and the score stood 6-3 in favor of Nebraska as the teams went in to the second intermission. Four straight goals by Nebraska's Jase Fuller, Mike Keogh, and a pair by Taylor Poland made it 10-3 and a power play goal by Dordt's Eric Huitsing after a nice backhand pass from Brandon Fast made it a 10-4 final. Huitsing's marker was his team leading 13th of the year.
Riley Braun made 24 saves while working the first two periods in goal for the Blades while Nico VanKeulen had 11 saves between the pipes in the final period. Nebraska's Jarrod Straw played 52 minutes in picking up the win with 19 saves and Mitch Pangle played in a cleanup role for the final 8 minutes with 6 saves.
Roinila finished the night with 5 points on two goals and 3 assists while Mike Keogh (1 G, 3 A) and Drew Kokosa (3 G, 1 A)both had 4 point night and Taylor Poland had two goals and an assist for 3 points.
Dordt College was 2 of 8 with the man advantage and successfully killed off all three of Nebraska's power plays.
