Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. University of Nebraska-Lincoln

(Sioux Center, Iowa) For the second game in a row on home ice, the Dordt Blades took an opponent to overtime after skating to a 3-3 regulation tie and for the second time they drop a hard fought contest in the extra session by a final of 4-3. With the loss Dordt College drops to 5-11-2-1 while the Huskers improve to 13-6-0-1 on the year.
Less than 3 minutes into the contest the Dordt Blades struck first as Brandon Fast banged home his 7th goal of the season at 17:01 on an assist from Eric Grootenboer. The Blades took a penalty late in the period and the Huskers capitalized with a power play goal with 1:38 left in the opening period. Kokosa's goal was his 9th of the year and Taylor Poland notched his 8th helper and the period ended with the score deadlocked at 1-1. Shots on goal in the first period were 17-9 in favor of Nebraska.
In the second period the Blades gave the #3 ranked ACHA Pacific Region Huskers all they could handle, and more. With under five minutes to play in the second period and the score still tied 1-1, Nebraska took their second penalty of the night at 4:31. With just 15 seconds left in the power play, Dordt's Eric Grootenboer picked up his second point of the night when he beat Nebraska netminder Chris Taylor with a wraparound goal. The tally was Grootenboer's 5th of the season with the assist going to Eric Walter, his 4th. Only 4 ticks remained on the second period clock when Grootenboer struck again, this time redirecting a Jon Gesink blast in to the top right hand corner to give Dordt a 3-1 lead going in to the second intermission. Each team was credited with 14 shots on goal in the second period.
At 16:36 in the third period, Nebraska cut the Dordt lead in half as Matti Roinila beat Dordt netminder Riley Braun in to the top right corner with assists from Taylor Poland and Kent Gunderson. Roinila's goal was his 16th of the season. Less than 2 minutes later Taylor Poland also went to the top right to notch his 16th goal of the season to tie the game at 3-3 with assists from Michael Keogh and Gunderson. Both teams had opportunities to score in the final 15 minutes but neither team was able, forcing the 4 on 4 overtime session. Shots on goal in the third period were 17-9 in favor of Nebraska.
In the overtime period, Nebraska's Drew Kokosa found Matt Pangle camped on the left post of the Dordt goal and Pangle banged home the game winner with 2:51 showing on the clock, for Pangle it was his 5th goal of the season.
Eric Grootenboer finished the night with 3 points for the Blades on two goals and one assist. Nebraska's Taylor Poland also had 3 points on a goal and two assists. Drew Kokosa (a goal and an assist) and Kent Gunderson (2 assists) also had multi-point nights for Nebraska.
Nebraska's Chris Taylor came away with the win in goal with 29 saves on the night while Dordt netminder Riley Braun suffers the overtime loss after turning away 45 shots.
The Blades will battle the Huskers again tomorrow (Saturday, January 21) at 4:15 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center.
