Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Creighton

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades lost a heart breaker this evening, falling in overtime 4-3 to Creighton as the Jays post their first win of the season. With the win Creighton improves to 1-10 on the year while the Dordt Blades fall to 4-11-1-1.
Eric Grootenboer notched his 4th goal of the season to give the Blades a 1-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the opening period of play, Andrew De Young had the assist. Michael Blessing tied the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the year coming at the 8:15 mark on an assist from Sam Olson but an unassisted goal by Dordt's Eric Huitsing with just 44 seconds left in the period allowed the Blades to take a 2-1 lead in to the break. The goal by Huitsing was his 11th of the season to lead all Blades in that category.
Less than 90 seconds in to the second period Blessing tallied his second goal of the night for Creighton to tie the game at 2-2 with the assist again coming from Sam Olson. Forty-seven seconds later, Dordt regained the lead when Kevin Christian banged in his 7th of the year on a helper from Doug Veldhuisen and the teams went into the second intermission with Dordt leading 3-2.
Creighton's Chris Inserra tied the game at 3-3 with the lone goal of the third period, a power play goal at 10:46 with assists from Sean Munro and Blessing. Despite countless opportunities in the final 10 minutes Dordt could not find the back of the net forcing the overtime session.
With just under 3 minutes to play in the 4 on 4 overtime, Dordt's Kevin Christian drew a penalty while breaking up a 2 on 1 opportunity. Just 32 seconds in to the man advantage, Michael Blessing got the hat trick and the game winner when his shot trickled in to the back of the Dordt goal.
Having not managed a point in 5 previous outings, Michael Blessing came up big against the Blades, finishing the night with 4 points on 3 goals and an assist. Equally sharp was Creighton netminder Lee Noel who finished the night with 53 saves in goal while securing the win. Riley Braun turned away 16 shots in goal for the Blades who will travel down to Omaha tomorrow (Saturday, January 14) for a 6:45 pm game in the Moylan Iceplex. Creighton finished the evening 2-4 on the power play with the Blades going 0-1.
