Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Metro State

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades dropped a tightly contested tilt this evening (December 1, 2011), falling 4-2 to Metropolitan State College of Denver in the first of three games in three days for each team.
Over the opening period of play neither team was able to get a goal past the netminders with Dordt getting outshot 14-6 and the Blades were 0-3 with the man advantage and also successfully killed off two penalties of their own.
With the game knotted at 0-0, the Blades avoided giving up a power play goal part way into the second period, when they successfully killed off over a minute of 5 on 3 and the ensuing 45 seconds of 5 on 4. With over ten minutes gone in the second period, Dordt College got on the board first when Nic Enerson got his third goal of the season on assists from De Young and Veldhuisen. De Young faked a shot from just inside the blue line and made a nice pass to Veldhuisen on the right side who played to Enerson in the middle for the one timer that eluded the Metro State netminder. With a minute and 35 seconds to play the visiting Roadrunners tallied to tie the score at 1-1 as Jeremy Rowell knocked in his 10th of the season with the lone helper going to Richard McGuire and the two teams remained tied after 2 period of play.
Metro State took their first lead of the night when Dan Sheehan scored a power play goal at the 14:07 mark to make it 2-1. Dordt's Eric Huitsing scored a power play goal of his own at 6:59 on assists from on Gesink and Brandon Fast to tie the game at 2-2. Huitsing's goal was his team leading 8th of the season.
With just over 5 minutes left in the third period the 'Runners Sam Suzor scored from just inside the blue line to take a 3-2 lead and Addam Page added an insurance goal with 1:27 left. With a little more than minute left in the game, Dordt pulled Braun for the extra attacker but could not muster a goal.
Dordt finished the evening 1 of 7 on the power play while Metro State was 1 of 5. Riley Braun had 28 saves in goal for Dordt College while Evan Hyndman had 23 saves for the Roadrunners.
Dordt drops to 3-9-0-1 on the season while Metro State picked up their 10th win to move to 10-4-1-0 on the year.
Dordt College will take to the ice again on Friday, December 2 when they play host to South Dakota State University at 7:30 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center.
