Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. South Dakota State University

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College and South Dakota State were deadlocked at 3 goals apiece after 33 minutes of action when SDSU scored their 4th with 7 minutes left in the second and added three more in the third to beat the Blades 7-3 this evening (Friday, December 2).

Five minutes in to the first period the visiting Jacks got on the board with a power play goal by Matt Schabacker to take a 1-0 lead. Dordt's Eric Huitsing tied the game with a breakaway goal at 9:31 with Kevin Christian getting credit with an assist. The Blades took the lead with a marker from Jeremy van Woerden with 2:30 to play in the first period. The goal was his first of the season after coming over to hockey upon completion of a successful cross country season which included a trip to the NAIA National meet. Kevin Prins assisted on the van Woerden goal. Thirty-four seconds later SDSU tied the game with a goal from Kaleb Juntunen and the team went to the first intermission tied at 2-2.

Eric Huitsing broke the 2-2 tie, tallying his second goal of the game and 10th of the season, just 9 seconds into the second period with an assist going to Eric Grootenboer. From then on all the scoring would belong to the Jacks as they tied the game with a goal at 16:54 from Tim Rotert and took the lead with a goal at 7:09 by Hunter Anshutz and the game went to the second intermission with the Jacks leading 4-3. SDSU got some breathing room with a goal 5 minutes in to the third period by Steven Cox and tagged on two more at 8:51 and 7:43 to seal the win. Hohertz had the 6th goal of the game with assists from Hunter Anshutz and Tom Novak. Anshutz added his 5th point of the night, scoring the final goal, his second, to go along with 3 assists.

Dordt netminder Riley Braun was replaced after the 7th goal and Nico VanKeulen played the final 7 minutes and 43 seconds, making 4 saves while Braun had 25 saves. Gil Haugan made 22 saves in goal for SDSU.

With the loss, the Blades drop to 3-10-0-1 while SDSU improves to 10-2.

Dordt will play its third game in three days tomorrow (Saturday, December 3)afternoon at 4:15 pm when they host the University of Colorado.
