Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Northwestern Health Sciences
October 22, 2011
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades rebounded from a 6-2 loss on Friday evening with a 6-3 win Saturday afternoon over Northwestern Health Sciences. With the victory the Blades pick up their first win of the young season before departing for a 3 game road trip to Wyoming and Colorado.
The game was a big departure from last night's contest where neither team was able to score in the first period as the teams combined for 5 goals in the opening 20 minutes of action. Eric Huitsing gave Dordt the early lead with a goal at the 14:26 mark with assists going to Brandon Fast and Jon Gesink. Northwestern tied the game less than 30 seconds last on Paul Broman goal. Less than a minute after that marker, Northwestern took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Aaron Howe. Kevin Christian tied the game at 2-2 with a goal at 11:24 with an assist from Andrew De Haan and with just 50 seconds left in the first period Kevin Prins gave the Blades the 3-2 lead going into the intermission with an assist from Kevin Ypma.
A Jon Gesink power play goal at 14:15 in the 2nd period on an assist from Andrew De Young would prove to be the game winner and was the lone goal of the period.
Gesink got his second power play goal of the night with 8:50 remaining in the third period to give the Blades some additional breathing room, Kevin Prins had the assist on the tally. Late in the third period Northwestern pulled their goalie and Paul Broman scored for the Naturals with the extra attacker on the ice to cut the game down to 5-3 but the Blades responded at the 41 second mark with an empty netter to put the game out of reach.
With the 6-3 win the Blades improve to 1-3 on the year.
Riley Braun picked up the win in goal for Dordt College, as the sophomore goalie turned away 41 of Northwestern's 44 shots on goal. Troy Otto had 33 saves in the loss for the Naturals.
