Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. United States Air Force Academy
January 14, 2011
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Blades got the New Year off to a great start by knocking off the United States Air Force Academy with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win.
The Blades got two goals in the first period as Jordan Janz banged in his 7th of the season at 17:37 from Gesink and Christian while Doug Veldhuisen got his first tally of the year when he knocked the puck out of the air standing just outside the crease. The Huitsing brothers, Gary and Eric, got the helpers on the Veldhuisen goal.
The final 14 minutes of the first period, combined with the entire second period and the first 9 minutes of the third added up to 43 minutes of scoreless hockey although the Blades had a big edge in shots on goal.
Trailing 2-0 the Air Force Falcons responded with two goals just 32 seconds apart to tie the game at 2-2. Paul Archambault got the Falcons on the board with 11:36 remaining in the third and just over a half minute later Tanner Lee tied the game at 10:52. Neither team found the net over the final 10 minutes forcing the game into overtime.
Two minutes into the overtime, with the teams playing 4 on 4, Matt Cignoli for the Air Force was whistled for a high stick giving the Blades the power play and a great opportunity to take the victory. Almost a minute into the man advantage, Jordan Janz dropped the puck to Brandon Fast on the left side; Fast collected the puck and sent a laser of a wrist shot into the top left hand corner for the game winner. The goal was Fast's team leading 8th goal of the 2010-2011 campaign and the marker brought the Blades fans to their feet.
With the victory the Blades move to 3-14 on the year while the Air Force drops to 4-7-2.
Dordt was 2 of 5 on the power play and a perfect 5 of 5 on the penalty kill. Freshman netminder Riley Braun had 21 saves in goal for the win while Patrick Mayfield turned away 35 of 38 in the contest.
The Blades will next take the ice on Friday, January 21 when they play host to the University of South Dakota at 7:30 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa.
