Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. South Dakota State

(Sioux Center, Iowa) A third period surge by the Dordt Blades made for an exciting final four minutes of hockey but the SDSU Jackrabbits held on for the 5-4 victory. The loss ends the Dordt win streak at 3 as the Blades lose for the first time in 2011 and move to an overall mark of 5-15 while SDSU improves to 13-7.
Nate Thomas got the Jacks on the board first when he scored just a minute and 22 seconds into the contest to give SDSU the 1-0 lead. Eric Huitsing tied the game at 1-1 when he scored a lovely short-handed goal, with 11:53 remaining in the first, the goal was Huitsing's 6th of the year. SDSU regained the one goal lead less than two minutes later when Tom Novak knocked in his 10th of the year at 10:18 in the first. Brandon Fast knotted the game at 2-2 when he scored a 5 on 3 power play goal from about 20 feet out with 3:11 left in period one. The period ended with both teams sharing identical statistics with 15 shots apiece, 4 penalty minutes each and 2 goals each.
Things could not have been more disproportionate in the second period as the Blades were outshot 13 to 2 and SDSU added 3 markers while holding Dordt scoreless. James Haynes gave the Jacks the lead for good with a goal at 17:45 in the second period and a pair of goals 62 seconds apart (3:50 and 2:48) gave the 'Rabbits a 5-2 margin. Jeff Hitchcock scored his 7th of the season at the 3:50 mark while Alex Johnson got his 5th at 2:48.
Dordt College did just what they needed to do early on in the third, cutting the Jacks lead down to 2 with another goal from Brandon Fast. Fast's tally at 16:36 breathed life into the Blades and made for an entertaining third period. Fast made it a one goal game with his hat-trick tally at 3:53 with an assist from Jon Gesink (his team leading 15th of the year).
Down 5-4 and needing a goal to tie, the Blades elected to pull Riley Braun with a little more than a minute to go in the game but could not get the equalizer, in spite of a a number of great opportunities in the final seconds.
Brandon Fast finished the night with 3 point on 3 goals and SDSU's Alex Johnson also had 3 points on a goal and 2 assists.
SDSU netminder and Sioux Center native, Eliot DeWit, got the win in goal for the Jacks, stopping 19 of Dordt's 23 shots while Riley Braun had the loss in goal for Dordt, turning away 31 of the Jacks' 36 shots.
The game finished quickly as both teams combined for only 12 penalty minutes with Dordt both team picking up 2 minors in the first period and Dordt College getting the lone penalty in the second and third.
Dordt will travel to Brookings on Saturday, January 29 for their second game against the Jacks. The game is scheduled to begin at 9 pm in the Larson Ice Center.
