Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Iowa State

(Sioux Center, Iowa) For the second night in a row the Dordt Blades went toe to toe with the Iowa State Cyclones who are currently ranked third in the Pacific Region. After falling behind 3-0 the Blades rallied to tie the score at 3 apiece before D3 Select Team player Guy Thievenot got in for the game winner for the Cyclones with 3:48 to play in the contest to win 4-3. Iowa State improves to 11-2 overall with the win while the Blades fall to 2-14 on the season.
Cody Johnson go the 'Clones on the board first when he scored with 5:19 remaining in the opening session. With 2:13 to play in the first, Kean Ludvicek scored to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
A power play goal at 16:51 of the second by Cyclone defenseman John Rainey extended the Iowa State lead to 3-0. The goals by Johnson and Rainey were their first of the season. Trailing 3-0, Dordt's Eric Grootenboer knocked home a rebound for his first of the year with the initial shot coming from Brandon Fast, the goal came at 13:42 in the second. Chase Van Gaalen, also adding his first of the season, scored on the power play to cut the Cyclone lead in half and the teams went to the locker room with the Clones clinging to the narrow one goal lead.
Less than 5 minutes into the third period Dordt's Jordan Janz scored on a wrap around effort to tie the game at 3-3. With just under 4 minutes remaining Cyclone defenseman Jordan Calpus sent a long lead pass to Thievenot who picked the puck up at the offensive blue line and skated in to the slot area before backhanding the game winner past Dordt netminder Nico VanKeulen.
For the second night in a row VanKeulen played very well in net for the Blades and turned away 44 shots in the loss. Jack Rice made 31 saves in the win for Iowa State.
The Blades will be off until after the Christmas break when they will resume play with a home game against the Air Force Academy on Friday, January 14 at 7:30 pm.
