Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Iowa State
December 3, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades stuck close to the #3 ranked team in the Pacific Region for the duration of tonight's contest before falling 4-1 to the Iowa State Cyclones. In spite of the loss the Blades played some spirited hockey and should head into tomorrow's rematch with Iowa State with a lot of confidence.
In spite of being outshot 16-7 in the first period the Blades found themselves in a scoreless tie after the first 20 minutes of action and the teams were still tied almost midway through the contest until Mason Uvodich tallied with 10:37 remaining in the second period. Less than a minute and a half later and on the power play, Dordt's Jon Gesink let a wrist shot fly from the blue line that beat the 'Clones netminder to the top right to tie the game at 1-1 with 9:16 to go in the second. Steve Quarnstrom broke the deadlock with 3:21 remaining in the second period to give Iowa State a 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission. The Blades outshot the Cyclones 17 to 12 in the second period.
With Iowa State clinging to a one goal lead, Cyclones defenseman John Rainy was issued a 5 minute major giving the Blades a great opportunity to tie the game. Dordt's Doug Veldhuisen took a penalty part way through the major to create two minutes of 4 on 4 hockey. During the 4 on 4 Dordt was issued a penalty shot which was taken by the Blades' TJ Francis. Francis tried to backhand the puck through the legs of netminder Jack Rice but Rice was able to make the stop. With the penalty to Veldhuisen expired Dordt still had almost a minute and a half on the power play and came very close to tying the game but with just 6 seconds to go on the Dordt advantage Iowa States' Martin Janecke skated the puck into the Dordt and tried a wrap around that was stopped by VanKeulen, however the puck was sitting on the left post and Janecke had time to take several whacks at it and finally found the back of the Dordt net for the shorthanded goal.
Brian Pate added an empty net goal with less than 5 seconds to go to secure the win for the Iowa State Cyclones who improve to 10-2 on the season with the victory. The Dordt Blades fall to 2-13 overall.
Nico VanKeulen had a strong night in net for the Blades turning away 35 of Iowa States' 38 shots he faced. Jack Rice had an equally impressive night in goal for Iowa State with 39 saves.
Dordt will play Iowa State again on Saturday, December 4 at 4:15 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa.
