Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. College of the Canyons: Clash in the Corn

(Sioux Center, IA) The College of the Canyons rolled to a 12-1 win over the Dordt Blades, securing the 2010 Cob Cup. The Cougars won all three of their games in the Clash in the Corn in Sioux Center, beating Hope College on day one by a score of 5-3, Wyoming on day two 9-4 and this afternoon's win over the Blades.
The Cougars managed only one goal on the Blades in the first 20 minutes of action as Dordt netminder Nico VanKeulen turned away 15 of the 16 shots while Dordt registered 9 shots on goal in the opening period.
In the second period the College of the Canyons scored early and often netting 6 goals while Dordt's Kevin Christian negated the Cougar shut-out effort when he scored with 4:12 left in the second period on assists from Gary Huitsing and TJ Francis. The period ended with the Cougars on top 7-1.
The Cougars added 5 more goals in the period to make it a 12-1 final. Brian Voogt led all scorers with 7 points on the night coming on 4 goals and 3 assists, Todd Hopkins also added a hat trick for the Cougars to go along with one assist, while Andy Jakiel added 5 helpers.
Nico VanKeulen minded the Dordt cage for the first 33 minutes of action and had 27 saves; Riley Braun played the last 27 minutes and had 17 saves. The Cougars also shared the tending duties with Mike McGrath making 13 saves in 28 minutes of action while Michael Phillips gave up the lone goal in 32 minutes of playing time while recording 9 saves.
The Blades drop to 1-8 with the loss and will be on the road for their next 5 contests beginning with a game in Boulder, Colorado on November 11 at 8:30 pm against Colorado University.
