November 4, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades picked up their first win of the 2010-2011 season with a solid come from behind win over the University of Wyoming. With the 4-3 victory the Blades improve to 1-6 and are tied with the College of the Canyons with a win apiece in the Clash in the Corn tournament currently underway in Sioux Center.
Early on it appeared as if the game was going to be a high scoring affair as the first shot on goal from each team found its way behind the opposing netminder. TJ Francis got the first goal of the night just 15 seconds into the game when he went down the right side and beat Robert Kola for his third goal of the season, Ethan Ulrich had the assist on the goal. At the 18:10 mark Wyoming evened the score at 1-1 when Ryan Bourcier tallied his second of the season. Only 2 minutes later the Cowboys took a 2-1 lead was Levi Wood went top shelf for his first marker of the year. Dordt tied the game when Eric Huitsing knocked in his third of the season. Huitsing was on his knees in the slot area when he backhanded the puck into the net at the 2:06 mark.
Dordt would take the lead for good at 12:33 in the second period when Brandon Fast made a nice move to beat a Wyoming defender and then pocketed the puck in the right side. Jon Gesink was credited with his 4th assist of the season on the Fast tally. Dordt increased its lead to 4-2 at 8:06 in the second when Wyoming netminder Robert Kola coughed up the puck while on the power play giving Dordt an opportunity for a short handed goal. Kevin Christian finished off a rebound on an initial shot from TJ Francis to get the shortie and the 2 goal lead.
Wyoming cut the lead back to one less than a minute later as Matt Schultz scored his fourth of the year while on the power play at 7:18. The teams went to the second intermission with Dordt on top 4-3.
Neither team found the back of the net in the third and Wyoming pulled their netminder for the extra attacker during the last 70 seconds but were unable to get the equalizer and Dordt secured their first win. Dordt will play Hope College on Friday, November 5th at 7:30 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center.
