Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Colorado State

October 15, 2010

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades dropped their season opener 7-4 to Colorado State University in front of a packed house at the Vernon Arena.

After scoring the first goal of the game, a power play goal by Kevin Christian from Gary Huitsing, the Blades surrendered 4 straight and went into the first intermission trailing 4-1 to the visiting Rams.

CSU increased their lead to 5-1 eight minutes into the second period but the Blades answered back less than two minutes later when Eric Huitsing tallied on an assist from Eric Walter to make it 5-2. Brandon Fast then went through the legs of the Ram netminder with a little more than 3 minutes remaining in the second period to cut the lead to 5-3, Jordan Janz assisted on the goal.

The Rams got the first marker of the third period when captain Aaron Bain got his second of the night to push the lead back to 3 goals. At the 8:07 mark of the period Brandon Fast got his second of the night to make it a 6-4 game, breathing life into the Blades. A CSU penalty after the goal gave the Blades a man advantage and a chance to cut the margin down to one but were unable to capitalize and the power play was cut short when the Blades received a penalty of their own. The Rams then tallied in the 4 on 4 to earn the 7-4 victory.

The Blades will play host to Colorado State again on Saturday, October 16 in the Vernon Arena with the puck scheduled to drop at 4:15 pm.
