Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Farmingdale State
March 11, 2010
(Germain Arena, Estero, Florida)
The Dordt Blades gave the #2 seeded Farmingdale State Rams all they could handle in today's pool play action. The Blades never trailed in the game until a Farmingdale State goal with 3:13 to go made it a 4-3 game with the Blades finally surrendering in the 5-3 loss.
Dordt College surprised the 2009 ACHA D3 silver medalists with a quick goal as the Blades struck just 1 minute and 43 seconds into the game as Brandon Fast scored glove side of the Rams netminder on a 2 on 1 feed from Nate Woudstra. In spite of being outshot 11 to 5 in the period the Blades were able to take the 1-0 margin into the first intermission. At the break, Dordt's assistant coach Adam Jeninga noted the importance of staying out of the penalty box as the Blades short bench could ill afford extra time killing penalties. Unfortunately Dordt did not heed the advice and a couple penalties in the second period would cost the Blades.
Farmingdale State's top scorer, Joe Mazzie would level the game at 1-1 when he tallied a power play goal at the 15:02 mark of the period. Dordt regained the lead 3 minutes later as Jordan Janz scored an unassisted marker tucking the puck into the left side of the net. The Rams added yet another power play goal at 10:30 when Kyle Pistani buried a rebound after an initial blast from Joseph Kublbock. Neither team found the net over the final 10 minutes of the second period and both squads went to the locker room tied at 2 apiece.
Dordt took their third one goal lead of the contest when Janz netted his second of the night and third of the tournament at the 14:30 mark in the third period. Janz scored the marker on the power play as he redirected a shot from Jake Esselink that found it's way past Ram netminder Patrick Mione. With 5:35 remaining in the game Farmingdale tied the game at 3 as Eric Zwerling buried a shot from the point that got past Gibbons on the left side. The Rams took their first lead of the game at the 3:13 mark of the third period as Kyle Pistani knocked home a big rebound on a shot taken by Michael Rotola. The Rams breathed a sigh of relief as they sealed the game with a 5th goal, that one coming at 1:30 as Pistani finished with the hat trick.
Dordt netminder Ted Gibbons had a great game in goal as he faced 44 shots on the afternoon, turning away 39 of those shots. Patrick Mione faced 25 shots and gave up 3 goals.
"It was certainly a tough loss," said Dordt Head Coach Bill Elgersma, "we played very well, we just don't have enough horses." Dordt's already short roster was further diminished as Kevin Christian was forced to sit out after suffering a concussion the day before.
Dordt should certainly hold their heads high as they took a very strong Farmingdale team down to the wire in this afternoon's game.
With the loss Dordt moves to a record of 11-10-1-1 on the season.
Dordt will finish their season with their last pool play game when they face Davenport at 10:00 am CST. The Blades are competing in their third straight ACHA D3 National Tournament.
