Dordt College ran into a very good Florida Gulf Coast hockey team today in ACHA D3 National tournament play, falling to the Eagles 7-2. Florida entered the tournament as the number 1 seed in the pool of 4 teams while the Blades entered as the 4 seed. With the win the Eagles, who are the host for this year's tournament being played in Estero, Florida, improve to 32-4-0-2 on the season while the Blades fall to 11-9-1-1.

It would be FGCU to get on the board first, in the final game of day one action, as the Eagles tallied with 13:18 remaining in the first period on a goal by Keith O'Connell. Dordt responded just 25 seconds later when Jordan Janz scored his 28th of the season to make it a 1-1 hockey game. The goal came after a face-off win by Nate Woudstra, who then passed to Janz who buried it in the left side of the Eagle net. Neither team was able to score over the rest of the period and the team entered the first intermission locked at 1-1 with FGCU holding a narrow 10-9 shot advantage over the Blades.

Gulf Coast took the lead for good with a go ahead goal by Eric Cosma at 16:32 and added to their advantage at 10:02 on a tally by Kelly Johnson to make it a 3-1 game. Dordt cut the lead in half when Todd Bakker found a small opening on the left side of the goal and tucked when in behind John Davidson, the netminder for FGCU; Ben Wagner was credited with the lone assist on the goal. Mike Fowler gave the two goal cushion back to the Eagles when he skated in from the boards and beat Ted Gibbons into the top right corner to make it a 4-2 hockey game after two periods. Florida Gulf Coast doubled the Blades in shots on goal in the second period with 14 to just 7 for the Blades.

It would be all FGCU in the final period as the Eagles got a second goal from both Johnson and O'Connell and an additional marker from Beaton to cruise to the 7-2 victory. The Eagles registered 12 shots in the final session while Dordt was only able to muster 3 shots on goal.

The lack of depth was certainly a big factor in Dordt's loss as the Blades have only two lines and fatigue becomes a factor in the latter stages of games. Ted Gibbons had 29 saves in goals for Dordt College on 36 shots while his counterpart John Davidson had 17 saves on 19 shots.

Dordt College will take on Farmingdale tomorrow at 12:45 pm CST. Farmingdale entered the tournament as the #2 seed in pool D and won their first day match up in a high scoring affair, defeating Davenport 9-8.
