Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Wyoming
February 20, 2010
(Fiesta Rancho SOBE Ice Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada) For the third straight season the Dordt Blades will be heading to the ACHA D3 National Tournament!! The Blades beat the University of Wyoming in Las Vegas, Nevada 4-1 to earn the berth to Estero, Florida.
After getting beat by the Cowboys 9-3 in the Clash in the Corn in November, Dordt has now beaten Wyoming twice this season by scores of 4-1 but this win was the big one.
Brandon Fast, who joined the Blades during the second semester, scored first to give Dordt the 1-0 lead with the marker coming at 14:44 in the first period. With 3 Wyoming players sitting in the penalty box the Blades took advantage of the extended 5 on 3 with Jordan Janz getting his first goal of the night and third of the tournament. The power play goal came at 3:23 in the first period.
Leading 2-0 going into the second period the Blades widened the gap when Jordan Janz netted his 4th goal of the 2 day tournament with 15:16 to play in the second period. A short-handed goal by Nate Woudstra with 9:02 left in the middle session would give Dordt plenty of breathing room going in to the third.
Both netminders faced similar shot totals with Dordt netminder Ted Gibbons having a very solid game between the pipes, turning away 37 of 38 on the night, losing the shut-out bid with just 3 seconds remaining in the contest, with Wyoming skating with the extra attacker. Kenny Ainsworth faced 41 Dordt shots, stopping 37.
Jordan Janz finished the night with two goals and an assist for 3 points and had 4 goals in Vegas and now has 27 tallies on the year. Brandon Fast had 1 goal in each game of the tournament.
Wyoming finishes the season with a record of 20-12 while the Blades improve to 11-8-1-1.
The Blades will travel to Estero, Florida to compete in the ACHA D3 National Tournament from March 10-14.
