Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. University of Nebraska-Lincoln
January 30, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) For the second day in a row the Dordt Blades fell to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers in NCCHA play. This afternoon's game was vastly different from last night's tightly played contest. Where last night's game was loaded with drama and excitement this game was loaded with trips to the "sin bin" as the Blades lost 5-3 in a game that lacked flow but not penalties. With the loss the Blades fall to 8-7-1-1 overall and 6-3-0-1 in the NCCHA.
The Blades got on the board first when Brandon Fast tallied his first marker as a Dordt Blade, a shorthanded goal, with assists going to Todd Bakker and Jake Esselink at 13:58. Matti Roinila got his 30th of the season for the Huskers at 10:54 to tie the game at 1-1. Andrew Alpsteg then gave the Huskers the lead at 3:48 and the teams went to intermission with Nebraska on top 2-1.
The lone two markers of the second period would belong to Nebraska as Cody Duncan scored a shortie with 16:11 to play and Mike Solomon made it a 4-1 game at 10:44 on a deflection goal.
Matti Roinila got his second of the night as the Huskers scored their second shorthanded goal of the contest just 45 seconds into the 3rd period to give Nebraska a 5-1 lead. Between that goal and the next marker the game featured multiple trips to the penalty box as the teams combined for 12 penalties over that period and there were 36 penalties for 104 minutes on the night. At 3:54 Nate Woudstra notched his 22nd marker of the season by deking out multiple Huskers before burying the puck to put the score at 5-2. Just 5 seconds later Woudstra got his 23rd when he took the face-off and sent a dandy shot into the top right corner to make it 5-3. Dordt was unable to get any closer over the final 3 minutes.
Chris Taylor had 38 saves on 41 shots as the Huskers netminder in 60 minutes of action while Ted Gibbons had 31 saves on 36 shots in 48 minutes played. Phil Nywening replaced Gibbons with 12 minutes left when Gibbons received a holding penalty along with a 10 minute misconduct, Nywening had 3 saves.
The Blades will next play host to the University of South Dakota on Wednesday, February 3 at 7:00 pm in the Vernon Arena.
