Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Wyoming
January 16, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) This afternoon the Dordt Blades avenged a loss earlier this season to the University of Wyoming as they knocked off the Cowboys 4-1 to improve to 8-6-1-0 on the year. The Cowboys beat the Blades 9-3 in November in a game played as part of the Clash in the Corn tournament hosted by Dordt College. In the last ACHA ranking which came out on December 13 the Cowboys were ranked 4th while Dordt sat in the 8th spot.
Woudstra scored his 21st goal of the season at the 16:26 mark to give the Blades the 1-0 lead. Woudstra was perched on the left side of the Cowboys goal when he received a quality pass from Brandon Fast that went through the crease and found Woody's blade for the goal. Dordt narrowly outshot the Cowboys 15-13 in the opening period. Dordt opened the lead to 2-0 with 17 seconds remaining in the second period when Todd Bakker scored his 21st of the year on a wrister from about 10 feet inside the blue line with assists from Eric Walter and Ben Wagner.
Wyoming cut the lead in half as Mike Leriger banged home a rebound with 17:17 to go in the third period. With about 15 minutes to go in the third period the Cowboys successfully killed off 5 minutes of Dordt power play, including 2 minutes while Dordt had a 2 man advantage. In spite of the quality penalty kill from the Cowboys they were unable to generate much offense and with 5:01 to go in the period Todd Bakker went coast to coast before burying a wrist shot past Cowboy netminder Kenny Ainsworth. The goal was Bakker's second of the night and gives him a team high 22 goals having added 4 last night as well.
The Cowboys elected to pull their goalie with 1:02 left in the third period and with only 5 seconds showing on the clock Jake Esselink skated the puck across the red line before tallying the empty netter, Esselink's 8th of the season, sealing the 4-1 victory for the Blades.
For the second night in a row Blades netminder Ted Gibbons faced 28 shots, turning away 27 of them.
The Blades are off to a good start in 2010 and will hope to build on that momentum as they host the University of South Dakota on Friday, January 22nd at 7:00 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center.
