Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Colorado College
January 15, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) In their first game back on the ice in over 5 weeks the Dordt Blades wasted no time in knocking out the cob webs as they scored early and often in defeating Colorado College 15-1. With the win the Blades move over .500 posting a 7-6-1-0 record while Colorado drops to 2-12.
It took the Blades less than a minute to get on the board when Jake Esselink blasted a shot from the blue line that got in behind the Tigers netminder to make it a 1-0 game at 19:01 to go in the first. A mere 6 seconds later at 18:55 Ben Wagner scored from right at the face-off circle to give the Blades a 2-0 lead. Jon Gesink added to the lead at 15:07 when he knocked the puck into a virtually empty net after receiving a great pass from Todd Bakker on the power play. Bakker then added one of his own at 14:30 when he nailed a hard slapper from the left face-off circle giving the Blades a 4-0 advantage. Woudstra made it 5-0 at 5:33 finishing a back hand pass from Doug Veldhuisen. Bakker rounded out the first period scoring when he deked out the Tiger netminder after receiving a pass from Ben Wagner.
Bakker got the natural hat trick as he scored the first two goals of the second period, giving him 4 on the night, with the goals coming at 19:16 and 15:49 of the second period, the 4th goal being lasered into the top right shelf on a shot from the left circle. Up 8-0, Jordan Janz scored his 17th of the season at 11:58 when he went in alone and made a nifty move to beat Tiger netminder Nate Flint. Flint entered the game after Silverman was removed in the first period with just a minute and 5 seconds gone having already surrendered two goals.
Ben Wagner added his second marker of the night to start the third period making it a 10-0 Dordt lead with 18:59 remaining. Wagner added another at 18:06 as he joined Bakker with a hat trick of his own. Jon Gesink added his second of the night at 16:35 when his soft wrist shot was redirected by a Tiger defenseman into the top right. Colorado took away Gibbon's big for a shut-out when they got their lone tally of the night with 16:28 to go as Gaelen Means scored. Jordan Janz added the next two goals as he became the third Dordt Blade to secure a hat trick. Janz's goals came at 14:05 and 7:56 in the third. Esselink got the book end goal as he scored the first and last goal of the night, the last coming with 6:47 remaining on a solo effort.
Todd Bakker finished the night with 7 points on 4 goals and 3 assists to give him 39 points on the season. Jordan Janz ended with 3 goals and 2 assists. Brandon Fast, who joined the Blades after the break, having spent the first semester at USF had 2 assists in his debut. Ben Wagner was solid in his return to the Blades line up tallying 3 goals and one assist.
Dordt goalie Ted Gibbons had a good outing making 27 saves on the evening.
The Blades will have a tougher outing tomorrow as they play host to the University of Wyoming at 4:15 pm in the Vernon Arena. The Blades lost to the Cowboys 9-3 in the Clash in the Corn held earlier this season.
