Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Grand Valley
November 20, 2009
(Sioux Center, Iowa)
After digging themselves into a 4-0 hole, the Dordt Blades battled back to get within one goal before falling 6-5 to the #1 team in the north region, Grand Valley State University. With the loss the Dordt Blades fall to 4-5-1 overall and are 0-2 in The Clash in the Corn tournament being held in Sioux Center at the Vernon Arena.
The Blades were outshot 13-6 in period one and gave up 3 goals to the Lakers. Less than two minutes into the contest Grand Valley struck with a Ben Sikkenga goal with 18:11 remaining on an assist from Tom Renkes. The Lakers tagged on two more with Ryan Luke scoring at 11:44 with an assit from Tim Marney before Cory Farrell added an unassisted power play goal at 3:43.
Leading 3-0 coming into the second period, the Lakers tallied first again, another power play goal when David Stone gave an excellent pass to Aaron Misner who pushed it into the Dordt goal at 14:25. Less than two minutes later, Dordt got on the board when Nate Woudstra buried a nifty wrister into the bottom right of the Lakers goal with 12:35 to go. Jordan Janz cut the Laker lead to 4-2 with a nice power play shot from the left that beat Laker netminder Cookinham on the short side on an assist from Jon Gesink. The second period ended with the score 4-2.
For the third straight period it would be the Lakers to get on the scoreboard first as Ryan Luke put the puck through the pads of Dordt netminder Ted Gibbons at 12:36 to put GVSU up 5-2. Nate Woudstra narrowed the margin to two goals when he sailed an impossible angled shot over the left shoulder of Cookinham at 9:38 and Dordt seemed to have the momentum going their way. The Blades, however, conceded a goal just 16 seconds later, the eventual game winner, as Renkes beat Gibbons over his left shoulder. The Blades, showing no quit in them tonight, made a game of it as TJ Francis scored with 6:13 remaining to make it a 6-4 hockey game. At 3:34, Jordan Janz would get his second goal of the evening to cut the lead to just a goal at 6-5. Dordt kept up the pressure outshooting the Lakers 10-6 in the period but could not get the equalizer.
In spite of the loss the Blades should feel good about their performance this evening as they battled for the entire 60 minutes and turned what appeared to be another blow out in to a very competitive hockey game.
The Blades were outshot 36-32 on the night. Ted Gibbons had 30 saves in goal for the Blades and seemed to get better and better as the game went on and made some key saves down the stretch. Max Cookinham had 27 saves in the win for the Lakers.
Dordt will play at 4:15 pm on Saturday, November 21 in their final game in the Clash as they face off against the University of Colorado, both teams are 0-2 in the tournament.
