Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Wyoming--Clash in the Corn Tournament
November 19, 2009
(Sioux Center, Iowa) For about 25 minutes the Dordt Blades and Wyoming Cowboys went back and forth, both on the ice and on the scoreboard but after that the wheels fell off as Dordt gave up 7 unanswered goals falling 9-3 in their first of 3 games in the Clash in the Corn.
Dordt College scored the first goal of the game just 4 minutes in to the contest when Jake Esselink fired a short-handed attempt into the body of the Wyoming netminder that ended up flipping over Robert Kola and into the back of the net. Wyoming answered back with 8:53 left in the period as Leriger's solo attempt got in behind Dordt goalie Nico Van Keulen. With 5:02 to go, Dordt took a 2-1 lead when Nate Woudstra's long reach deflected in a Jordan Janz pass that found the left side of the cage. Less than a minute later Wyoming tied the score again as a puck fired in by Levi Wood trickled into the Dordt goal and the teams went to the locker room with the score 2-2.
With less than 2 minutes gone in the second period Jake Esselink's second goal of the night gave Dordt a 3-2 lead when his backhander found the left side with assists from Woudstra and Walter. Unfortunately for Dordt that would be their last tally of the evening and Wyoming scored 5 straight in the second and tagged on two more in the third. Forty seconds after the Esselink goal Wyoming tied the game at 3-3 when Allred redirected the biscuit into the Dordt goal. A short-handed effort by Galbreath gave the Cowboys the lead at 4-3 with 15:29 to go in the period and Galbreath added a second goal a minute and a half later to make it 5-3. A Freeman backhand effort and a Levi Wood goal would make it 7-3.
Wyoming added two more in the early stages of the third period to make it 9-3 including another short-handed goal by Wyoming, this one a solo effort by Erik Blomberg.
The Blades gave the puck away often in the contest which led to numerous odd man rushes and solo opportunities for the Cowboys who capitalized on their chances.
Robert Kola made 36 saves in goal for the Cowboys while Nico Van Keulen had 15 saves in 26 minutes of action for Dordt, giving up 4 goals before Ted Gibbons finished the final 34 minutes giving up 5 goals, while stopping 14. Dordt moves to 4-4-1-0 on the season.
Dordt's next game in the Clash in the Corn will be on Friday, November 20 against Grand Valley State at 7:00 pm. Grand Valley was a 3-2 winner over the University of Colorado in their first game of the tournament.
