Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Creighton
November 14, 2009
(Away) In a fashion much more dramatic than last night, the Dordt Blades beat the Creighton Jays this evening to improve to 4-3-1-0 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Unlike last night's 11-3 drubbing of the Jays, this game went down to the wire before the Blades secured the victory in the final minute of play, winning the game 6-4.
The first period of action in Omaha was 20 minutes of scoreless action, but it would take little time into the second period for a goal as Creighton took a 1-0 lead on the Blades at the 18:49 on a Jonathan Williams marker. At 12:44 the Blades would even the score when Todd Bakker picked up where he left off last night with his 5th goal over the Jays and his first of the evening with an assist from Eric Walter. Creighton would get the lead back less than a minute later on another Jonathan Williams goal, this one on the power play, to end the period with the Jays up 2-1 over the Blades.
Early in the third the Jays would push the lead to two goals as Connor Hayes tucked one in the Dordt cage at 19:15. Down two, Dordt made the best of the power play with back to back goals from Nate Woudstra with the man advantage. The first tally came at 17:10 with a helper form Jon Gesink, while the second came with 11:14 remaining with another assist from Gesink and the second helper to Jake Esselink. With the score locked at 3-3 the Jays took little time getting the lead back as Sam Olson scored at the 10:20 mark to make it 4-3. With time running down in the game Dordt leveled the score at 4-4 when Bakker scored his second of the night with an assist from Jon Gesink, Gesink's 3rd assist of the night.
With the score tied at 4-4 Zach Staudt, who had scored his first game of the season last night, got the game winner with a scant 44 seconds on the clock on an assist from Nate Woudstra. Creighton pulled their netminder after the Staudt goal and Dordt controlled the ensuing face-off and Jon Gesink found the empty net to put the game out of reach.
Jon Gesink had 4 points on the evening on a goal and 3 assists while Todd Bakker and Nate Woudstra each finished the night with 3 points on 2 goals and an assist.
Dordt will play host to the Clash in the Corn this week Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each of the three nights Dordt will play at 7:00 pm and will face Wyoming, Grand Valley State, and Colorado respectively, as the four teams vie for the "Cob Cup".
