Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Air Force Academy

(Monument, Colorado) The Dordt Blades concluded their two game trip to Colorado this evening with an 8-5 loss to the United States Air Force Academy.
The Blades surrendered the first two goals of the contest as the Falcons struck with goals at 16:01 and 12:42 of the first to go up 2-0 on the Blades. Dordt cut the lead down to one when Jordan Janz netted one at the 6:13 mark with assists from Nate Woudstra and Jon Gesink.
With the score 2-1 after the first period the Falcons jumped on the Blades early in the second period with 3 goals in the first 10 minutes of action to take a 5-1 lead. Dordt answered with goals from Janz and Woudstra to narrow the margin to 5-3 but Air Force pushed in another goal with two minutes to go in the period to push the lead back to 3 goals at 6-3.
For the third straight period it would be Air Force to get on the board first as the Falcons went up 7-3 at the 12:01 mark of the final frame. Todd Bakker then took it upon himself to try and make a game of it when he tallied back to back goals for the Blades to make the score 7-5. The first Bakker marker was a power play goal with 5:36 to play with assists from Janz and Ulrich while the second was a short-handed effort with 5:17 to go. With the lead down to just 2 goals the Blades pushed hard but could not cut the margin any further and conceded a goal with 37 seconds left to fall by a final of 8-5.
Ted Gibbons spent the first 28 minutes in goal for the Blades giving up 4 goals with Nico Van Keulen surrendering the other 4 goals in the final 32 minutes of action.
Bakker and Janz both finished the night with 3 points on 2 goals and one assist.
With the loss the Blades fall to 2-3-1 and will return to the ice on Friday when they host Creighton at home on November 13 at 7 pm in the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center, Iowa.
