Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Mesa State

Woudstra Scores Hat Trick to Lead the Blades
In the first contest of their two game outing in Colorado, the Dordt Blades defeated Mesa State by a score of 7-3 to improve to 2-2-1 on the year.
Dordt took an early 1-0 lead in the game when Gary Huitsing scored a power play goal with 16:06 to go in the first period with helpers from T.J. Francis and Jake Esselink.
Although there was only one tally in the first period the second period featured a host of scoring with Dordt netting 4 goals while Mesa State scored 3 of their own. Mesa State struck twice in the early going of the 2nd period to take a 2-1 lead on the Blades with goals coming with 18:01 remaining and again with 15:50 to go. Dordt evened the score at two apiece when Nate Woudstra scored a power play goal at 14:23 with an assist from Todd Bakker. Mesa State would take another one goal lead when Keith Birlson scored with 12:28 to go. From there on out it would be all Dordt College with the Blades tacking on the last 3 of the second period. Bakker tied the game at 3-3 with 7:18 to go followed by two unassisted goals by Nate Woudstra at 4:01 and 1:22 to give him the hat trick on the night and extend the Blades lead to 5-3.
In the third Dordt added two more with Jordan Janz knocking in a pair with the first coming with 18:15 showing on the clock and the final goal an unassisted power play goal with 5:44 to go.
Nate Woudstra finished the night with 3 goals and an assist for 4 points while Jordan Janz (2 goals) and Jake Esselink (2 assists) also had multiple point nights.
Nico Van Keulen played all 60 minutes in goal for the Blades for the win while making 27 saves. The Blades outshot Mesa State 60 to 30.
The Blades will play in Colorado again tomorrow when they face off against the US Air Force Falcons in Monument, Colorado at 6:30 pm.
