(Away) The Dordt Blades fell 8-3 to Calvin College tonight in a contest pitting two ACHA Division 3 foes against each other. Calvin tallied the first four goals of the opening period, two of those goals coming from senior captain Justin Blaauwendraat, giving him seven on the year, to take a convincing lead. Dordt finally got on the board late in the first period with a power play goal, ending the period with Calvin on top 4-1.

Down 3 goals, the Blades played a more attacking style in period number 2 but could only match the Knights on the 2nd period score sheet as each team added another marker in the frame. Calvin was able to hold off the Blades with 3 successful penalty kills near the latter stages of the second period.

In the third period it would be Calvin getting the upper hand again, putting three more goals on the board, including a short-handed effort from Adam Van Opstall, while Calvin gave up only one to the Blades.

Ted Gibbons had a busy night in goal for the Blades, facing 48 shots while Grinde faced 16 shots in goal for the Knights.

Both coaches were very proud of the opportunity to play for the cause of breast cancer awareness. Dordt Coach Elgersma said, “It doesn’t matter what uniform you’re wearing tonight, as long you’re wearing pink.”

The game was the first of two games to be played in western Michigan.

Dordt will play Hope College on Saturday, October 24 at 8:30 pm in Holland, Michigan.
