Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Northwestern Health Sciences

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades got their 2009-2010 season off to an impressive start with a 5-3 win over Northwestern Health Sciences University this evening.
In front of a "Parent's Weekend" crowd of about 800, the Blades got the scoring started when Nate Woudstra got his first marker of the season at the 13:45 mark of the first period on assists from Esselink and Bakker. The Naturals tallied one of their own just 8 seconds later to tie the score at 1-1 with the goal coming from Dan Cianna with an assist to Ryan Olson. Dordt would get the lead back at the 8:16 mark of the first period on a Jordan Janz goal with an assist from Nate Woudstra. The Blades extended the lead to 3-1 when Todd Bakker scored a power play goal with just 51 seconds remaining in the period, with Eric Walter and Dordt netminder Ted Gibbons being credited with assists. NHSU answered back again with a Chris Trimner goal coming with just 4.5 ticks remaining on the clock to put the score at 3-2 after the first period.
Dordt would once again push the lead to two goals as Ben Wagner scored at the 18:25 mark of the second period with helpers going to Kevin Christian and Jon Gesink. Yet again, NHSU answered back as Cianni scored his second of the night with 3:30 remaining in the second period. However, the 1 goal margin would be short lived for the Naturals as Ben Wagner scored top shelf, his second of the night, just 5 seconds later with an assist from Todd Bakker.
The third period would feature 7 penalties but no goals. Ted Gibbons registerd 21 saves in goal for the Blades while Nick Ongaro was credited with 28 saves on the night.
The Blades are now 1-0 on the year and new head coach Bill Elgersma has his first win as a collegiate hockey coach.
Dordt will play Northwestern Health Sciences University again tomorrow with the puck drop scheduled for 4:15 pm.
