Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Tennessee

After one heart-breaker and another heart-stopper, the Dordt College Blades hockey team veered away from the dramatics with a convincing 4-1 win over Tennessee in day three of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division III National Tournament.
The Blades broke through with a goal nearly 19 minutes into the game when Todd Bakker banged in a short-handed marker with 1:18 left in the first period for a 1-0 lead, the assist went to Jake Esselink who did some great work along the boards and then found Bakker.
The one goal lead stood up the entire second period and Dordt broke through with two quick goals early in the final period. Brandon Breukelman scored an even strength goal with 16:20 left with Esselink getting another helper and the other going to Matt Chesla. Nate Woudstra as much as sealed the win with a power play goal with 15:10 left in the game, assists to Bakker and Rempel.
Tennessee got on the board with 6:05 left when McGinnis scored for the Vols with assists from Elaguizy and Yoder. Joel Sikkema capped the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:09 left in regulation for the final of 4-1.
Coach van Niejenhuis was pleased with the way his guys have responded after the first round loss, "We played a very disciplined game, I felt like we did a nice job keeping our penalty minutes down and we ran our systems very well. Our intensity level was high for the entire 60 minutes.
Dordt improves to 2-1 in the four-day event while Tennessee falls to 1-2. By virtue of their record and the low number of goals against over the three games Dordt will play in the 5/6 game against Northern Arizona University. Dordt had the lowest goals against of the teams with 2-1 records while Northern Arizona was next. The winner of that game will finish the tournament ranked fifth while the loser will finish in sixth. Northern Arizona plays in the same region as Dordt College and NAU has held the number one rank in the Pacific Region for the entire season. The final game of the tournament for the Blades will begin at 4:15 pm.
