Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Delta Community
March 5, 2009
(ESL Sports Centre, Rochester, New York)
Dordt scored the game winner with less than a minute left on a goal by Nate Woudstra to give Dordt a 4-3 win in the consolation bracket of the ACHA Division III Hockey Tournament. Dordt entered the final period down 2-1 and responded with three goals in the final period to pull out the win. Delta had tied the game briefly at 3-3 with a goal after pulling their goalkeeper with just over a minute remaining.
Dordt spent a great deal of the first period in the penalty box and were fortunate to escape the first period without giving up a goal, partially due to a solid penalty kill for the Blades.
After a scoreless first period, Dordt's Nate Woudstra struck first when he scored with 18:32 to go in the second. Delta Community answered right back when Kevin Munoz scored a power play goal at the 14:55 mark to tie the game at 1 each. Delta then took the lead when Justin Cornell scored at 9:46 to go, also on the power play. Kevin Prins got the Blades back to level with a 3rd period power play goal at 9:49. Woudstra's second goal of the night with 6:34 to go would give Dordt the one goal lead. With a little under 2 minutes to go the Pioneers coach yanked their netminder to get the extra attacker out on the ice. The move paid off for Delta when Schultz tucked the puck behind Dordt netminder Ted Gibbons to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:04 showing on the clock.
Dordt appeared to be heading to overtime for the second day in a row until Kevin Prins shot the puck from the right side of the ice. The Pioneer's goalie gave up a big rebound that ended up right on the stick of Nate Woudstra who buried the shot with 46 seconds to go to give Dordt the victory and earn Woudstra the hat trick.
"I think we showed a lot of character being able to regroup and get it together after yesterday's loss, we showed a lot of poise. We certainly ran into some challenges, it was difficult to get any flow due to very little even strength time (There were 23 penalties recorded in the game). We haven't played in that many tight games this year, we didn't panic, we executed well and the intensity was phenomenal. The thing we did today was play 60 minutes of hockey and that was the difference. Perseverance, poise and character were certainly key for us to keep the game in reach in what was a very tense environment," said Coach van Niejenhuis in a post game interview.
Nate Woudstra had a multi-point night with the three goals as did Kevin Prins with 3 points on a goal and 2 assists while Rempel had 3 points on 3 assists.
Blades netminder Ted Gibbons faced 22 shots, making 19 saves while the Pioneers goalie Jason Cornell has 16 saves on 20 shots.
Dordt faces Tennessee at 1:15 Friday in their next game at the tournament in Rochester, New York.
