Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Fredonia State
March 4, 2009
(ESL Sports Centre, Rochester, New York)
For the second year in a row the Dordt Blades lose their opening round game in the ACHA tournament by virtue of a shoot-out. The Blades and Fredonia State Blue Devils skated to a 4-4 tie at the end of regulation and Fredonia State took the shoot-out 4-3 with each team sending 7 different skaters in the shoot-out.
Jared Rempel struck first for the Dordt Blades when his blue line slap-shot snuck through the pads of the Fredonia State netminder to give DC a 1-0 lead at the 17:32 mark, assists came from Chesla and Breukelman. Fredonia State was held off the board for most of the period until Ryan Theophilus scored with 6:58 to go to tie the game at one apiece and the period ended that way.
The Blue Devils would break the 1-1 draw when Theophilus tallied again, this time a short-handed marker with 13:30 to go in the period. Dordt did not put their heads down and only 8 seconds later, still on the power play, Jon Gesink let a shot go from the blue line that found the back of the Fredonia to tie the score at 2-2, Kevin Prins and Matt Chesla had the assists. Fredonia State's Mike Salter would break the tie with 5:29 to go in the second to push the score to 3-2.
Dordt entered the third period down a goal but a flurry of action got the Blades the lead back as Esselink went on a solo effort at the 15:54 mark and buried a wrister to tie the game. Thirteen seconds later Todd Bakker buried a shot to give the Blades the 4-3 lead. Aaron Miller knotted the game at 4, less than two minutes later, when he scored at the 13:56 mark of the third period.
There would be numerous opportunities for both teams to score over the last 14 minutes but neither squad could find the back of the net and the score would end at 4-4 in regulation. Five minutes of overtime play left the score even and the teams went to a shoot-out.
In the ACHA, the format has each team send 5 skaters to shoot (in the NHL it is 3)and after 5 shooters the score remained tied as both teams scored 3 of the first 5. The next shooter from each team could not find the back of the net and the 7th shooter was called into action. Fredonia's Salter tallied to give them a 4-3 shoot-out win as Jon Gesink could not find the back of the net on Dordt's final attempt.
