Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Iowa
February 7, 2009
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Blades had a big second period over the Iowa Hawkeyes for the second night in a row, beating the Hawks 8-1 and outscoring them 5 to nothing in period number 2.
The two wins over the Hawkeyes this weekend lifts the Blades record to 19-4-1-1 and continues their unblemished second semester of hockey as Dordt is 6-0 since the break. The Blades have outscored their opponents 62-7 and have posted two shut-outs over those 6 gaves.
The Blades scored first in tonight's outing as Dordt defenseman Jon Van Keulen scored from the high slot area at the 18:12 mark of period 1 on a pass from Nate Woudstra. Woudstra scored one of his own at the 13:26 mark of the 1st on assists from Bakker and Brad Westervelt to give the Blades a two goal margin. Dordt kept that two goal cushion by fighting off a full 2 minutes of 5 on 3 Hawkeye power play when Jon VanKeulen (hooking) and Kevin Prins (interference) each took two minute penalties at 5:04 in the first. Seconds after the Blades successfully killed off the two minutes Matt Chesla took a penalty and the Hawkeyes capitalized when Joe Henrici scored on the power play to slice the the lead in half.
The second period, as it was last night, was completely dominated by Dordt College as they scored 5 unanswered goals to push the lead to 7-1. Woudstra scored his second of the night with 16:26 remaining on assists from Bakker and Rempel. Some quality puck movement from Heerema and Sikkema set up a Kevin Prins goal at 13:49. Brad Westervelt scored with 11:49 remaining when Bakker took the puck all the way in to the Iowa end from his own blue line and laid off a nice pass for the Westervelt tally.Nate Woudstra got the hat trick when he scored unassisted with a top shelf shot on the right side at 3:30. Chesla finished off the second period scoring when he scored from the middle of the ice even with the top of the face-off circle beating Lawson left side at 1:17.
In period 3 Dordt worked on their trap for a couple of shifts and did not spend much time on the attack and the only goal of the period would be scored by Brad Westervelt, his second of the night, coming at 8:06. "I know that trap is a four letter word and I am not that big of a fan of it myself, but I really felt like we needed to be able to do it well to help us in Nationals", said Coach van Niejenhuis after the game.
Freshman netminder, Nico Van Keulen, spent all 60 minutes in goal for the Blades turning away 22 shots while giving up only one goal. "Nico played very solidly in goal tonight, making a couple big saves on the 5 on 3," added van Niejenhuis. Derek Lawson had 31 saves for the Hawkeyes while surrendering 8 goals.
Nate Woudstra finished the night with 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points, followed by Brad Westervelt's 3 points on 2 goals and one assist and Bakker's 3 assists.
