Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Air Force Academy
January 16, 2009
(Sioux Center, Iowa) In spite of going about 40 days without a hockey match the Dordt Blades appeared to have little to no rust in their play as they skated to a 6-0 win over the Air Force Academy Falcons. The win boosts the Blades record to 14-6 overall and 9-1 in NCCHA conference play.
Todd Bakker got the Blades on the scoreboard first when he added to his team leading point total wristing a shot over the left side of the Air Force netminder at the 17:56 mark of the first period on assists from Nate Woudstra and Kevin Prins.
Bakker tallied his 21st goal of the season just 2 minutes later with a highlight-reel quality play as he showed some fancy stickwork to beat a pair of Falcons, then made a nice pass to Woudstra who sent an equally good pass right back to Bakker in the slot for one-timer into the back of the net.
After getting a pair of assists on the first two goals, Woudstra decided to get a few of his own, scoring three straight goals for the Blades and earning the hat trick. Woudstra's first goal came with 7:44 remaining in the first as he scored from right in front of the cage with assists going to Bakker and Rempel. With 9:11 to go in the second Woudstra scored again beating netminder Mayfield on the short side. With 6:46 to go in the second Woudstra got the hat trick when Heerema skated around the Falcons goal and backhanded a pass to Woudstra for the tally with the second assist to Kevin Prins.
Joel Sikkema rounded out the Blades scoring when he stole the puck deep in the Falcons end and beat the goalie far post for an unassisted goal.
Woudstra finished the night with 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists to give him 45 points on the season while Bakker had 2 goals and an assist to bring his season mark up to 49. Kevin Prins and Jared Rempel both had multiple point nights as well with two helpers apiece.
"Certainly going into this game we were uncertain about how we would perform with the big lay-off and thought there might be a little rust. These (Air Force) players are very well conditioned and you know you have to play hard for 60 minutes. We seem to have gelled right away and had some top quality goals. Teddy did a nice job in net and made some great saves to earn the shut-out," said Coach van Niejenhuis after the game. "Bill (Elgersma) mentioned after the game that it might have been the best the team has looked all season."
Netminder Ted Gibbons finished the evening with 27 saves. Dordt was 3 for 5 on the power play while the Falcons were 0 for 6 with the man advantage.
