(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades got off to a sluggish start, giving up two short-handed goals in the first period and were unable to rebound from the deficit falling to the Minnesota State (Mankota) Mavericks by a score of 6-3.

The Blades went on the power play with 1:52 remaining in the first period and instead of tallying a power play goal they gave up a short-handed goal to Eric Armundson at the 1:32 mark and another to Nathan Ries with 14 seconds remaining in the period to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Minnesota State added to their lead when Mike Franks scored at the 16:33 mark in second period. Franks added another tally at the 6:59 mark when he was awarded a penalty shot that he tucked away in the right side of the Dordt cage giving the Mavs a 4-0 advantage at the end of the frame.

Dordt played solidly the last 5 minutes of the 2nd period and carried that momentum into the third as they got on the board when Jon VanKeulen buried a slap-shot from the blue line in a 4 on 4 situation with 17:30 remaining in the 3rd. Minnesota State would get the 4 goal cushion back at the 9:42 mark when Luke Harren netted one. Just 32 seconds later Kevin Prins would add an unassisted goal for the Blades at the 9:10 mark to cut the lead to 3, unfortunately the Mavs would push the lead back to 4 when Erik Larson scored with 6:56 remaining. Todd Bakker would add the final goal for Dordt when he stole a pass and ripped a shot that was initially not ruled a goal but had clearly gone under the crossbar and hit metal in the back of the cage and then came flying out. During the next stoppage in play at 3:32 the linesman conferred with the referee and the goal was awarded. The goal gives Bakker 18 goals on the season and a team high 45 points.

Netminder Ted Gibbons played all 60 minutes in goal for the Blades giving up 6 goals on 31 shots while Dordt registered 43 shots on goal scoring on 3 against Mavs goalie Tony Beringer.

After the game Coach vanNiejenhuis commented: "maybe it was the residual tryptophan ...our puck motion was sluggish and we need to have crisper passing and faster speed of execution."

The loss brings Dordt's record to 13-5 on the season and Dordt will play the Minnesota Stake (Mankota) Mavericks again tomorrow, Saturday, December 6 at the Vernon Arena in Sioux Center with the puck to drop at 3:00 pm.
