Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Calvin
November 20, 2008
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The long awaited match-up between the Calvin Knights and the Dordt Blades is in the books with Calvin taking the game 5-2.
Calvin and Dordt faced off in the "Clash in the Corn" tournament this evening in what was a great night of hockey for both institutions and hopefully a Calvin-Dordt match-up will become an annual event for the schools. The tilt started with a ceremonial puck drop featuring Dordt's VP for College Advancement John Baas (a Calvin grad donning a Calvin jersey) and along side him was Dordt prof and golf coach Mark Christians sporting a Dordt jersey.
After the pre-game it was Dordt that got on the board first when Kurtis Heerema scored a power play goal with 6:04 remaining in the first on an assist from Nate Woudstra. The Blades would add to their lead when Kevin Prins scored with 1:53 left in the first with helpers going to Todd Bakker and Jake Esselink and the period would end with Dordt up 2-0.
Calvin struck back quickly in the second when Chuck Hofbauer tallied on the power play just 27 seconds in to the frame to cut the lead in half. Calvin tied the game with 12:20 remaining in the second when Zantingh netted one for the Knights and the teams went to the locker room deadlocked at 2-2.
It would be all Calvin in the third period as the Knights scored 3 more unanswered goals to lift the score to a 5-2 final. Brandsen struck with 13:28 left on the clock, followed by Regts at 12:27 who stole the puck from Dordt and scored and Blaauwendraat added the final goal with 7:18 on the clock.
Dordt netminder Ted Gibbons played all 60 minutes in goal giving up 5 goals on the night, one on the power play while Chris Pasma spent the evening between the pipes for the night giving up 2 goals, one on the power play. Goalie stats were not available on the official score sheet.
The win gives Calvin the edge as they compete for the Cob Cup against Dordt, Wyoming and Wisconsin-Platteville in the quadrangular tournament.
The teams showed mutual respect for their opponents throughout the contest and even posed for a group photo after the game. Although there is certainly a rivalry between the two schools, hockey is the only sport that these two CRC colleges go head to head in. The atmosphere in the Vernon Arena was phenomenal and we look forward to more great hockey on Friday and Saturday.
In the first game in the Clash in the Corn, Wyoming defeated Wisconsin-Platteville by a 6-5 margin, giving Wyoming and Calvin each a win, while Dordt and UWP both suffer a loss.
Friday 's match-ups will have Calvin against UWP at 4:15 while the Dordt Blades and Wyoming face-off at 7:15. On Saturday Calvin will play Wyoming at 4:15 followed by Dordt and UWP at 7:15.
