Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. Wyoming
November 8, 2008
(Ice and Events Center, Cheyenne, Wyoming) The Dordt Blades finished their 3 game tour of Colorado and Wyoming with an impressive 10-1 victory over the Wyoming Cowboys. The Cowboys are currently ranked second in the ACHA Pacific Region, one spot ahead of Dordt but that is likely to change when the next set of rankings come out.
Dordt got the scoring started at the 17:37 mark of the first period when Kevin Prins scored a power play goal with assists going to Gesink and Bakker. Bakker would score one of his own at 7:35 with helpers going to Breukelman and Esselink. Wyoming would cut the lead in half at the 4:04 mark when Bauder scored, however that would be Wyoming's last goal of the night. Woudstra finished the first period scoring for DC at the 3:03 mark on a short-handed effort with an assist from Esselink.
In the second and third periods it would be all Dordt College as the Blades outscored the Cowboys 4-0 in the second period and 3-0 in the third, including two more goals by Todd Bakker to give him a hat trick on the evening. Dordt started the night skating seven forwards but lost Kevin Prins at the end of the second period and he did not play the rest of the game, leaving the Blades with just two forward lines.
Dordt outshot the Cowboys 32-20 and Dordt goalie Ted Gibbons registered the win with 20 saves and only one goal against.
Over the course of the week the Blades outscored their three opponents by a combined score of 27-4, and the three wins this week put Dordt at 9-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play.
In spite of the higher altitude and some travel difficulties the Blades played "lights out" according to Coach Nate vanNiejenhuis who added: "We have a team that is a pro-active and resilient bunch...these guys really make my life easier."
Nate Woudstra, who had a 4 point night, leads the Blades with 34 points (20 goals, 14 assists) on the season.
Dordt will next play at home in Sioux Center (Vernon Arena) on Friday, November 14 at 7:30 pm against Creighton.
