Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. South Dakota State University

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades hockey team improved to 6-2 on the season with a convincing 8-3 home ice win over the SDSU Jackrabbits this evening and the two teams will face off again tomorrow in Brookings.
Although the evening would feature multple point nights for many of the DC Blades, both teams got off to a sluggish start in the first period which featured no scoring and both sides going 0-1 on the power play.
SDSU got the scoring started in the second period when Brian Hermanson scored for the Jacks at 17:42. The Blades answered back scoring the next 3 goals, with Woudstra scoring a power play goal at 9:47 with assists going to Esselink and Rempel and less than a minute later Sikkema scored with helpers going to Prins and Rempel at 8:55. Bakker would net his 7th tally of the season with 5:22 remaining in the period on assists from Esselink and Chesla. SDSU cut the Dordt lead back to one when Tyler Vanliere scored with 1:39 remaining in the second.
The third period would be all Dordt College as the Blades played with much more passion outscoring the Jacks 5-1 in the frame. Woudstra added to his scoring at the 16:17 mark on a pass from Esselink. Heerema scored at 15:47 with another assist to Esselink and one to Woudstra. Bakker added his second with 7:40 remaining when Kevin Prins gave him a great pass leaving him with an easy one timer, Gesink had the other assist on the goal. Jon VanKeulen would get his first goal of the season just 20 seconds later from Bakker and Prins. Nate Woudstra finished the night with a hat trick when he tallied with 2:53 left from Prins and Sikkema. SDSU had the final goal of the night with one second remaining as Vanliere scored his second of the evening.
The game featured a great deal of 4 on 4 hockey and the extra ice was a definite advantage for the better skating Dordt College Blades.
Nico VanKeulen had his first action between the pipes for Dordt College and the freshman netminder had 16 saves on 19 shots as he worked the entire 60 minutes in goal for Dordt.
Dordt will play SDSU again tomorrow (November 1, 2008) as they travel to Brookings for 7:00 pm game.
