Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. St. Thomas
October 24, 2008
(Minneapolis, Minnesota (Parade Ice Gardens)) The Dordt Blades dropped only their first game of the season in a 6-2 loss to a fast skating St. Thomas team tonight in the Parade Ice Gardens in Minneapolis. The Blades played the entire evening with just 2 forward lines and 2 defensive pairings and were able to hold St. Thomas off the score sheet for the first period. However, they could not sustain the play in the second giving up four goals in the period, including one short-handed goal and one power play goal.
St. Thomas scored first a little over a minute and a half into the second period, but Dordt answered back when Kevin Prins tied the game at the 14:48 mark with assists going to Joel Sikkema and Todd Bakker. The next 3 goals would go to St. Thomas as they scored 3 straight to close the period.
Dordt openend the third period with a quick goal, just 40 seconds in, to cut the lead to two, as Nate Woudstra scored his team-leading 7th goal of the season on an assist from Jake Esselink. That would be as close as the Blades got as St. Thomas scored two more in the period including another short-handed goal with 5:18 remaining in the game.
Ted Gibbons got peppered with 46 shots and made 40 saves for the Blades with St. Thomas getting 13 shots in the first period, 19 in the second and 14 in the third. Dordt had 22 shots on goal with five in the first, seven in the second and ten in the third. Coach Nate van Niejenhuis stated: "(DC goalie) Gibbons stood on his head tonight and his glove was very strong or the score may have been worse."
Coach van Niejenhuis was positive after the game, noting that his guys could learn a lot from this game and hoped to improve when they play St. Thomas again tomorrow at 5:00 pm. "We played O.K. in the 1st and 3rd periods but not well in the second. St. Thomas is a quick team and if you make a mistake they will make you pay".
The Blades are now 5-1 on the season, with a 3-1 record on the road and a perfect 2-0 at home in the Vernon Arena.
