Game Media

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt Blades started the home season off well with a 9-7 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones to improve their record to 4-0. Goals game early and often for both sides in the contest.

The Cyclones got the first tally of the game just 3 minutes and 45 seconds in but Dordt answered back with three straight goals of their own. The first goal for DC was scored by Kevin Prins with assists going to Jared Rempel and Joel Sikkema. Nate Woudstra got the second goal for the Blades less than a minute later with an assist going to Kurtis Heerema. Bakker scored next with an assist from Jake Esselink. ISU then answered back with a couple of their own to level the score at 3-3. Heerema broke the tie with 4:39 to go in the period with assists to Jordan Janz and Nate Woudstra. The period ended with Dordt up 4-3 and two Cyclones with game misconducts and 5 minute major penalties.

The Blades started the second period with almost 5 minutes of the two man advantage. In that span they scored 4 goals. Todd Bakker had the first two goals in the advantage with the first being unassisted and Jared Rempel had a helper on the second. Bakker's goal gave him a hat trick in Dordt's first home game for the 08-09 campaign. Rempel then got a goal of his own with assists from Heerema and Janz. The final goal in the advantage went to Prins with helpers from Bakker and Sikkema.

The third period started with DC leading 8-4. Dordt added to their lead when Nate Woudstra scored his second on the night with a helper going to Jon Gesink. That would be all the scoring for the Blades on the evening as ISU scored the next three and got the game to 9-7 with about 2 minutes to go in the contest. Dordt coach Nate van Niejenhuis then called a time-out to settle his squad and the Blades responded well holding off the charging Cyclones over the final couple minutes.

Dordt netminder, Ted Gibbons, faced 38 shots on goal in the contest and turned away 31 for a .815 save percentage.

Dordt will hope to build on the positives of tonight's game when they face the Cyclones again tomorrow.

The Blades will be in action at the Vernon Arena in the All-Seasons Center at 3:45 pm on October 18 against the Iowa State Cyclones. This is game two of a "double header" with the 'Clones.
