Dordt College Blades Hockey vs. South Dakota State

(Brookings, South Dakota) For the second night in a row the Dordt Blades hockey team was an 8-1 winner at the Early Bird Invite hosted by South Dakota State University in Brookings.
The Blades scored early and often with Jake Esselink starting things with a short handed goal off an assist by Jared Rempel at the 17:36 mark of the first period. Brandon Breukelman then knocked in a goal off an assist from Todd Bakker and Jon Van Keulen at the 11:54 mark. Esselink got his second goal of the period right at two minutes later off an assist by Rempel and Kurtis Heerema. The second Esselink goal was also short handed. Rempel capped the scoring in the first period with a goal at the 5:52 mark off a feed from Esselink and Bakker.
South Dakota State University got their only goal of the game at the 16:28 mark of the second period but Nate Woudstra answered with a counter off an assist by Bakker at the 11:20 mark for a 5-1 lead at the end of the period.
Dordt go three more goals in the third period with Kevin Prins getting a feed from Bakker at the 17:00 mark. Bakker got his first goal of the game with 14:40 left off an assist by Matt Chesla and Breukelman capped the scoring with a power-play goal off assists from Prins and Jon Gesink.
Bakker got credit for four assists and a goal while Esselink and Breukelman each had two goals and an assist each. Kevin Prins had a goal as did Woudstra while Rempel was in on a goal scored and two assists. Van Keulen, Gesink, Heerema and Chesla all had single assists.
Ted Gibbons faced 52 shots and allowed just the second period goal in 60 minutes of play.
Dordt is 2-0 and will face Nebraska-Lincoln on Saturday at 2:00 in the final game of the invite.
