The Dordt College Defender men's golf team finds itself in a tie for eighth place at the Great Plains Athletic Conference qualifier after round one of the four-round event that spans the fall and spring.
Dordt shot a 322 at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City, Iowa and are 29 shots off the pace set by Nebraska Wesleyan, the 2009 GPAC champion, and Morningside. Both teams shot 293's under near perfect conditions at the par-71 course.
Dordt was led by Ryan Kamp's 76 and Jordan Janz had a 77. Michael Behnke and Blake Lubben carded an 84 and an 85 respectively to complete Dordt's scoring. Kyle Jaack's (Nebraska Wesleyan) 68 was the low score for the day with Hastings' Jon Tanner carding a 70 for second place. Kamp's score puts him in 15th and Janz is 21st.
Four other teams, Dakota Wesleyan (296), Northwestern (296), Briar Cliff (301) and Hastings (302) are all within ten strokes of the leader.
Landsmeer's setup was 6411 yards for the event.
Round two of the qualifier will be held at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Nebraska on October 6 and is hosted by Doane College.
